In October of 2017, I got the chance to sit down with Sam Beiler, Founder and Owner of Spooky Nook Sports. We talked about his life, The Nook, the community, and the Team Members that work here. Episode 4 focuses on the relationship between The Nook and the surrounding community.
MB: What do you want The Nook to be known for?
SB: On the mission side of what we do, that’s creating an environment where our guests feel safe and enjoy what they’re doing. That’s creating an environment for our employees where they can grow, improve, and really thrive. And it goes back to how do you feel when you get here in the morning, and how do you feel when you leave here at the end of the day. If you leave feeling as strong or stronger - and more fulfilled - than when you arrived, then I think we’re creating an environment where people can thrive.
MB: What impact has The Nook had on the community?
SB: So, there are a couple things that are pretty obvious. From a jobs perspective, we have somewhere around 600 employees on payroll and a couple hundred of those are teenagers or college students. And what a great place for a first job or for your high school job or college job - a sports complex. There’s so much energy here and we have such an array of activities that it’s almost impossible to get bored even if you work here regularly – all the time. I think creating those jobs and giving people an opportunity to learn and grow is obviously a big part of what we do at The Nook. The economic impact in Lancaster County is significant. Between restaurants, and hotels, and all of the other ancillary services that are provided by others to the guests that come through the Nook, that’s a significant part of what we do. This year, somewhere around the end of September, I think, we had our one millionth person come through the building just for this year. So, with that kind of activity, the economic impact is pretty obvious in the area.
