Beat the Heat – 4 Ways to Keep Cool With Your Kids This Summer

Keep Cool

School’s out & summer’s in! It’s time to enjoy the weather and play outside in the sunshine. When the sun is unbearable and you’re trying to beat the heat, keep cool with these four fun games!

1. Drip, Drip, Drop

This game is very similar to duck, duck, goose, but with water! Everyone sits in a circle and one person, who is “it,” walks around the circle dripping water onto everyone’s head from a bucket while saying, “drip, drip, drip.” When the person who is “it” says “drop,” they pour the rest of the water onto the chosen person’s head! That person then gets up and chases the other person around the circle back to their original spot. If the person who got the water dropped on them doesn't beat the dripper back to their spot, they become “it.”

2. Kiddie Pool Kickball

This game follows the same rules as regular kickball, but adds water and slip ‘n slides to the mix! You will need four kiddie pools to use as the bases, one beach ball to use as the ball, and four large tarps with lots of soap to place between each pool. There are three to five innings and there are three outs per inning. Each team will work to make it around the bases to score points.

3. Ice Cream in a Bag

One of summer’s most delicious treats is ice cream! This easy recipe will make ice cream that is ready to eat in five minutes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup Kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pint-size Ziploc bag
  • 1 gallon-size Ziploc bag

Enough ice cubes to fill the gallon-sized bag ½ way
Any of your favorite ice cream mix-ins

  1. Fill the gallon-sized bag halfway with ice and mix the salt around the ice.
  2. Mix the milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl and pour into a pint-sized bag. Seal the bag.
  3. Put the pint bag with the liquid mixture into the gallon bag with the ice. Seal this bag.
  4. Shake the bags vigorously for five minutes.
  5. Remove the pint bag and enjoy the ice cream.
  6. If you would like, add sprinkles, chocolate chips, or any other mix-ins into your ice cream.

4. Bubble Snake

Don’t be afraid! This fun activity will take bubble-blowing to a whole new level.

Supplies:

  • An empty plastic water bottle
  • A piece of terry cloth fabric, old washcloth, or tube sock
  • A rubber band
  • Dish detergent
  1. Cut the bottom off of your plastic bottle and cut your fabric, washcloth, or tube sock into a circle
  2. Put the fabric circle over the open bottom of the bottle and secure it with the rubber band
  3. Put some dish detergent in a bowl and mix in a little water.
  4. Dip the bottle into the soap and water mixture and blow into the mouth of your bottle.

*Hint: a slower, gentle stream of air will create a longer chain, or snake of bubbles!
