The Nook had the pleasure of hosting the Janus School’s Thanks for Giving Benefit Luncheon last week with keynote speaker Pete Rose. Rose, also known as “Charlie Hustle,” is Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, with 4,256 hits, and holds the MLB record for the number of games played, 3,562 games. He is also the only player in MLB history to play more than 500 games at five different positions. This was the first time Rose has visited Lancaster.
His speech consisted of humorous anecdotes about his life, time in the MLB, and playing with the Phillies. He also answered a few questions from the audience.
Below are some of our favorite quotes from his speech:
“Baseball is all about the fans.”
“I love Philly fans, but I love Cincinnati fans more because I was born there.”
“I’m big on heart, enthusiasm, work ethic. Those are God given talents. I’m not big on money ball.”
“You can’t hide on the field. Go to the ball, something good might happen.”
“One thing you can’t do as an athlete is cheat the fans. If you cheat the fans, you cheat yourself.”
“Win, lose, or draw – come back and do it again.”
“You can’t worry about what you do today, tomorrow, the next day, the next year – you can only worry about right now.”
