Youth flag football involves some of the most fun parts of American football, while removing some of the more dangerous elements. Players can stay active and perfect their passing, throwing and defending skills. Flag football helps kids make friends and build their interpersonal communication skills through teamwork and sportsmanship.

All you need to play flag football is a ball and flag belt. Flag belts tie around the waist and hold two or three flags fastened with either buttons or hook-and-loop strips. For footwear, Spooky Nook allows players to wear sneakers, running shoes or molded cleats on turf fields. Metal spikes are not allowed.

If you understand how traditional American football works, you already have a pretty good idea of how to play flag football. The main difference is that flag football replaces tackling as a downing method with pulling a flag from the ball carrier's waistband.

In most cases, flag football games consist of two teams with between five and eight players per side. The ball carrier may not protect their flag with their body. Defenders can only pull a player's flag when that player is carrying the ball.

Just like traditional American football, the goal is to reach the other team's end zone. Flag football's scoring rules follow those of American football.
