Published
08/29/2024

With a new season approaching, now is a good time to reset and create new goals. Ever wondered what it would be like to run a 5K? Check out these tips on how to train an accomplish your first 5K. Training and running in races is a fun way to stay active with your friends and family members.

Step 1: Set Your Goal
Define your goal. A person new to running, may want to focus on finishing the race. If you're a seasoned runner or incorporate running into your workout routine more often, maybe your goal is to beat your previous time. Setting your goal will help you stay on track throughout your training.

Step 2: Choose a Training Plan
A well-structure training plan is key to preparing for your next 5k. Most plans are designed to gradually increase your running distance while allowing time for recovery. According to Runners World, it's important to incorprate short intervals (1-minute run, 1-minute walk), in the beginning stages of your training. It's often easier said than done, but focus on a consistent training schedule to keep your goals on track.

Step 3: Focus on Form and Breathing
When you focus on your body form and posture, it makes a positive difference in your training. Maintaining upright posture, with relaxed shoulders, and striding each step out, will help make a difference. In addition to focusing on your form, it's important to be mindful of your breathing. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth, following a steady rhythm.

Step 4: Add Strength and Mobility Training
The next step to assist in your 5K plan, is strength and mobility training. Strength and mobility exercises help build muscle, reduce the risk of injury, and can help improve your overall running performance. Focusing on exercises that target your core, legs, and hips - can assist in mobility. In between running days or after a training run, focus on yoga or dynamic stretching to improve flexibility and prevent muscle stiffness.
