Plans for former SMART Paper site move forward

HAMILTON — Nearly two weeks after the former Champion/SMART Paper mill’s smokestack was demolished in Hamilton, the site’s owners are moving forward to create new development on the nearly 45 acres west of the Great Miami River.

The Champion Paper Mill was founded as a coating mill in 1894, and paper-making continued on the property grounds until the mill closed for good as SMART Papers in 2012. The last-standing of three original smokestacks was demolished on June 27 by property owners Green Reclamation, a division of Pennsylvania-based Moses B. Glick LLC, an industrial scrap and salvage company. Green Reclamation purchased the site property on the west side of North B Street, while the city of Hamilton retains ownership of the property on the east side, including the Great Miami Rowing Center and the former employee parking lot.
