America loves sports — playing them and watching them. In the 2018-2019 season alone, more than 153,000 people attended one of the five major sports league games. Sporting events can be loud, even chaotic, and exciting. They're a place for players and spectators to come together and celebrate the fun of the game.

Whether you're a player, a coach, a spectator or just someone going for tailgating food, we have a sporting event checklist to make your preparations easier.

What to Bring When You're Playing or Coaching

As a player or coach, there are several things you should bring to each game to keep you performing at your best, including:

  • Your uniform and all required gear
  • Plenty of water
  • High-protein snacks, such as energy bars
  • A duffel bag to keep your items safe
  • A change of clothes, including extra socks in case of rain
  • Sunscreen
  • An insulated jacket
  • A sport towel
  • Rain gear to wear when you're not playing

If you're coaching a sports game, you should bring all of the above items, as well as:

  • Playboards
  • A small first aid kit
  • A whistle
  • Team emergency contact information if applicable

What to Bring When You're Watching

Here is what to bring to a sports game as a spectator — other than plenty of team spirit, of course:

  • Your tickets
  • A comfortable seat cushion
  • Binoculars if you're seated near the back
  • Comfortable shoes
  • A blanket or insulated jacket
  • Bug spray
  • Rain gear
  • Fan gear and team clothes
  • Sunglasses
  • A portable cell phone charger
  • Noisemakers
  • Sunscreen to apply before and during the game
  • Money — cash and card — and an ID card for purchasing concessions and souvenirs

The Tailgating Essentials

One of the best parts of attending a sporting event is enjoying a tailgating party with your friends. Here are the things to bring to a sports game tailgating party:

  • A tailgating tent
  • A cooler filled with ice and drinks
  • Music and speakers
  • Games, such as cornhole or ladder ball
  • A portable grill
  • Food, like hot dogs and hamburgers
  • Condiments and utensils
  • Plenty of comfortable chairs
  • Blankets
  • Rain ponchos
  • Trash bags to clean up afterward
