Spooky Nook Sports celebrates 5 year anniversary

Published
06/4/2018

On Sunday June 3rd, 2018, Spooky Nook Sports celebrates the fifth anniversary of opening its doors. The original vision for Spooky Nook Sports was just 10 volleyball/basketball courts. Five years later, The Nook is now home to 20 different sports, an 81,000 sq. foot climate-controlled dome, 130,000 sq. feet of meeting space, a state of the art climbing facility, the Warehouse Hotel, and Forklift & Palate Restaurant.

The below video from last year features some of our Team Members at The Nook that have been here since the very beginning. Here's what they had to say

Spooky Nook Sports is called the Home of Hockey, as it is the main training facility of the US Women’s National Field Hockey team. In April of this year, The Nook and US Women's Field Hockey hosted an international series between USA and Chile.

The Nook is also home to over 650 employees. The group started at about 10 people and has grown exponentially to include hundreds of full and part-time employees.

On May 19th and 20th of this year, Spooky Nook Basketball hosted our largest internal tournament yet at 260 teams!

Since its inception, The Nook has gone through many changes, expansions, and undertaken many projects. Recently, a team of Nook Team Members went out to Hamilton, Ohio (the proposed site of Spooky Nook Sports Champion Mill) to host a weekend-long softball tournament.

Earlier in 2018, we also acquired LANCO Fieldhouse, now known as Spooky Nook Sports LANCO. This property, located at 1901 Miller Rd, East Petersburg, PA, is serving as an extension of the current Nook Sports programming. Our goal at The Nook has always been to grow and develop youth athletics in Lancaster County, as well as to support the local economy. With purchasing this additional space and keeping it as a sports facility, it will allow us to continue to live out both of those initiatives.

Spooky Nook Meetings & Events is another division that has grown immensely over the course of the last few years.  In 2017, they hosted 250 non-sporting events — from trade shows and job fairs to
banquet events for 1,000 people.

Tourism Economics, a company out of Wayne, PA that develops economic impact analyses, conducted a recent study that calculated the impact of Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster County over the last year. The total economic output (both direct and indirect business sales) across the county totaled $54.7 million, including generating 60,000 hotel room nights just last year. The number of jobs created as a result of this economic output in Lancaster is estimated at more than 1,300.

As we enter this next chapter, we want to thank everyone who has helped make this vision a reality, as well as the community for their continued support of The Nook.
